Kids Corner – U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (Accessed 1/31/04)
Gr 5-8-This site would be useful for a middle grades
student that is researching endangered species and how young adults can get
involved in the cause. It is informative in the fact that the site allows you
to search for specific species, find out where they are located and what is
causing their endangerment. The site also has resources for a student to find
out what can be done in their community and state to help endangered species.
Although some of those suggestions are probably a little far-reaching (“Develop
and distribute a stream or watershed protection guide”), there are activities
that might interest a student, like “Plant a garden at school for wildlife” or
“Hold an Arbor Day Tree Planting.” While the site is educational and
informative, it is not very appealing to the eye and therefore may not hold the
interest of a young adult who is used to flash and graphics for very long.
Games are included, but they are simple and would probably not keep the
students involved. Many of the links lead to more links that may be confusing
and hard to follow for a novice Internet user.
Generally, this is a good site for research, but it will not entertain
and draw a student in for more knowledge.
